A Brief Guide to Transmission Rebuilding

0

There are a lot of different factors that affect how long transmissions last but if yours has gone and you need to rebuild it, do you know what to do? There are many reasons that you may consider transmission rebuilding even if the old one isn’t broken: you may want to install an aftermarket one, for instance.

Yet to many people, the idea of rebuilding a transmission seems incredibly complex.

It doesn’t have to be. In this guide, we’ll show you what you need to do to rebuild yours. Read on and learn more!

Removing Your Transmission

The first thing that you need to do when you’re going to rebuild a transmission is to remove the transmission from your vehicle. You will usually need to remove the engine block, so you will need an engine lift.

You will also need to take out the torque converter and the transmission oil pan.

These can sound very tricky but they’re not actually difficult jobs.

You’ll also need to clear a place in your workspace where you can put the engine block, transmission, and other parts. Clear a space and make sure that it’s clear of any detritus or dirt. The last thing you want to happen is to go through the whole process and then end up with dirt in your transmission housing.

Transmission Disassembly and Rebuilding

Disassembling your transmission is the easy part, especially if you have a transmission rebuild kit, which gives you all the tools that you need to do the job.

When you disassemble the transmission, you’ll need to take a close look at each part and then clean them. You can do this manually or by using a chemical wash and a parts washer, which you should be able to rent.

You should take a close look at each part to make sure that none of them are broken. If they are, you’ll need to take a look at aftermarket automotive drivetrain parts.

When you’ve cleaned the parts and replaced any broken ones, you’ll need to rebuild the transmission. As you’ve already disassembled it, this isn’t usually a tricky operation.

If you’re not satisfied with how the rebuild has gone, you should call in a mechanic to make sure that you’ve done it right. Driving with an improperly-rebuilt transmission could seriously endanger your safety, so it pays to make sure that you’ve got it right.

If, however, you’re happy with how the rebuild went, you’ll need to replace the transmission, then the other parts, and finally, the engine block.

Transmission Rebuilding: A Skill for Intermediates

Transmission rebuilding isn’t a skill for amateurs, like changing your oil, but if you feel confident with your tools and know how your car works, it’s far from the most difficult thing that you can do.

It can also save you a lot of money, even if you do need to buy new parts!
